Financial Literacy Workshops

Financial Aid > Financial Literacy Workshops

This April, Virginia Credit Union will be on campus offering engaging financial literacy workshops designed to help you take charge of your money. Check out the four topics below and sign up for the sessions that interest you–or attend them all! We can’t wait to learn alongside you–see you in the room!

Balancing Budgeting & Saving: Smart Money Moves for College Students

April 1, 2026
Natural Science Center, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Register for 4/1 11:30)
Natural Science Center, 5:00 – 6:30 PM (Register for 4/1 5:00)

This interactive workshop helps college students learn how to manage their money without feeling overwhelmed or deprived. Participants will explore how budgeting and saving work together–not against each other–to support both short-term needs and long-term goals. Students will learn how to create a realistic budget that fits their lifestyle, identify opportunities to save even with limited income, and prioritize expenses while planning for future costs. The session also highlights common financial pitfalls students face and provides practical tools to build healthy money habits that last beyond college.

Understanding Your Credit Score

April 9, 2026
Fralin Center Rm HP208, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Register for 4/9 11:30)
Natural Science Center, 5:00 – 6:30 PM (Register for 4/9 5:00)

This workshop helps college students break down the mystery of credit scores and understand how everyday financial decisions impact their future. Participants will learn what a credit score is, how it’s calculated, and why it matters for things like renting an apartment, buying a car, or qualifying for lower interest rates. The session covers smart ways to build and maintain good credit, common mistakes that can damage a score, and practical strategies to use credit responsibly while in college.

Preparing for Large Purchases

April 16, 2026
Natural Science Center, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Register for 4/16 11:30)
Natural Science Center, 5:00 – 6:30 PM (Register for 4/16 5:00)

This workshop helps college students make confident decisions about major purchases by focusing on true affordability–not just what they’re approved for. Participants will learn how to plan for large expenses such as vehicles, housing, or technology, and understand how budgeting, credit, and financing options affect the total cost over time. The session also highlights common pitfalls that lead to overspending or unnecessary debt and provides practical tools to evaluate options, compare costs, and align purchases with both current needs and future financial goals.

Savings for Your Future Self

April 20, 2026
Natural Science Center, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Register for 4/20 11:30)
Natural Science Center, 5:00 – 6:30 PM (Register for 4/20 5:00)

This workshop helps college students understand the importance of saving early and how small, consistent actions today can create long-term financial stability. Participants will learn practical ways to start saving–even with limited income–while balancing current expenses and short-term goals. The session covers different types of savings, the power of compound growth, and strategies to make saving automatic and realistic. Students will leave with tools and confidence to build habits that support their future selves well beyond college.
